What Are The Requirements To Become A Tattoo Artist?
Most people engage in this career and business because of their fascination and passion with this work of art. Tattoo artists are often addicted to having tattoos and body piercings on their own bodies. However, for those who lack information regarding this profession, they may often ask what are the requirements to become a tattoo artist?
1. Training and education.
Even if there are no formal training and educational requirements set by certain states, it is advised to take up trainings and courses that could enhance your talent and abilities in drawing and making designs. We suggest you undergo art classes or take up a degree in Fine Arts. This way, you would be able to familiarize the basics and important concepts in making a nice piece of art.
2. Create a portfolio.
Make sure to present a portfolio containing your best masterpiece. Make sure to maintain uniqueness and originality in your work samples.
3. Apply for an apprenticeship program. You may learn a lot and gain experience through the mentorship of more experienced tattoo artists. Within the duration of 2 years or more you would definitely learn all the necessary procedures and precautions which include: applying a tattoo correctly, maintaining sterility and cleanliness of equipment, keeping a hygienic and sanitary workplace and making better designs.
4. Become a certified professional tattoo artist.
Requirements for this would depend on the state where you are planning to practice. Although this is not always applicable to certain places, we suggest you do so. To gain a certification, you must be at least 18 years of age, have a background and training in arts and design, completed a 2 year apprenticeship program and familiarization with the necessary precautions and hazards in handling instruments and equipment.
5. Obtain a license from you local Health Department.
You can get this by participating in certain training such as: Sanitation Education and Blood Borne Pathogens Training. Both of which educate you regarding the safety precautions and measures to be done in order to avoid spread of blood borne diseases. Sterilization of needles and other materials before and after used is given emphasis during the course of the trainings. Aside from this, discussion of the rules and regulations by the United State Occupation Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also conducted. Your license is not only beneficial for your clients, but also for yourself. Through this, you may be able to perform your job while lessening the risk of you to be injured by needle pricks.
