How Long Does It Take To Become A Taxi Driver?
If you’ve always wanted to become a taxi driver you might want to think it over and consider other factors. First, taxi drivers do not earn much. Most of their income is consumed by paying a car’s lease and for filling up the gas tank. Second, taxi drivers work on very long shifts. One shift could take at least 12 hours and could extend to 14 hours. That is an average of 80 working hours per week. And lastly, working as a taxi driver puts you in high risk for robbery.
With that in mind and you still want to become a taxi driver, the process is easy and before you know it, you can already start working as a “cabbie”.
So, how long does it take to become a taxi driver?
1. If you’re at least a high school graduate with a valid driver’s license and have been driving for a couple of years, you can become a taxi driver. The only other thing to consider is whether you state requires a special taxi driver license. If so, you just have to take the test to gain this license.
2. There are two options to consider when you start working as a taxi driver:
1. Apply as a driver in a taxi company/ fleet.
Working in a fleet requires the driver to undergo training that is usually 2-4 weeks long. Some companies require at least 8o hours of schooling. These trainings focus on educating drivers about road hazards, safety and regulations, driving ethics and good customer service.
2. Drive your own car and apply it for membership under a fleet.
Driving your own cab still requires you to undergo the same training. The only difference between owning the cab and renting is that you would not have to worry too much about the lease since it’s your car.
After the training, you can start working for the fleet right away. It wouldn’t even take more than a month before you start working. Unlike other jobs, it wouldn’t take years of education and does not require you to attend series of trainings. No battery of tests to take either. So, basically, becoming a taxi driver is an easy and fast process.
