The business world is one of the most competitive industries in the world. While the number of jobs available is high, not everyone is suited to work in the business industry. Take an investment banker for example. Just because you graduated high school or college doesn’t mean you instantly qualify for the position. The competition is tough and there are thousands of others who want to get the same job.
So, what are the requirements to become an investment banker?
- First, you will need a bachelor’s degree in fields that can prepare you for the job. Study Math, Finance, Marketing, Business Administration, Accounting, or Economics. Formal education is the first step to becoming an investment banker. It is unlikely to land a job in investment groups or banks without proper education.
- In between courses, make time to join effective communication and business writing classes. During career week, it is common that different departments of the university conduct numerous seminars and it would help if you join and participate in these events.
- Internship. As a college student, the most important thing you should do is apply for summer internship on your last term. This training will be your chance to experience the industry first hand. Most hiring companies also require that you have undergone internships while in college.
- As soon as you finish college, it is best to pursue further education and get an MBA. Getting a master’s degree in business can greatly help in finding a job in the future. Also, since it has become rare for companies to accept graduates who only hold a bachelor’s degree.
- Armed with a degree and an MBA, you can start to look for jobs within your state. Most entry-level employees are made analysts or associate investment bankers. They do not directly deal with clients at this stage. Analysts work on creating “pitchbooks” that will be used for selling products. While associates work on more important tasks like preparing business proposals, as directed by the investment banker.
- Take continuing education classes. Make sure to keep yourself updated with the latest trends in the economy and the global market. Read newspapers, watch the news, browse the Internet for economy and business related forums. Make use of the available resources as much as you can.
Working in the business industry is tough but with the right education and training, there will always be an available job for you. Work with experienced investment agents and learn from their experiences. Keep on educating yourself. It is the only key to surviving the fast-paced world of business.
