As early as high school teenagers start to experiment with fashion, especially with hair styles. Having beautiful and well-styled hair can become anybody’s asset. A girl can be noticed simply because she looks lovely in her hair, or a boy with a clean cut. The responsibility of a hair stylist goes beyond giving their clients a haircut. It includes educating them about hair care and gives advice on what type of haircut to get and which to avoid. Becoming a hair stylist requires skill and an eye for beauty.
If you want to become a hair stylist, it would take a few years of training and practical exams. But the best answer to how long it takes to become a hair stylist is about 3 years.
- Going to a community or technical school for cosmetology training will take about 9 months to a year. Make sure that the program you enrolled in is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). If it isn’t, you may not be permitted to take the exam for licensure.
- Apprenticeship is required for you to be able to take the state board exam for hair stylists. The minimum required training time is about 2-3 years. During this time, try to learn as much as you can to be able to confidently pass the practical part of the exam.
- Take the state board exam for licensure. The exam conducted will take about 2 days depending on the number of test takers. Most of the exam is spent on the practical portion where hair stylists show what they have learned to exam proctors and the accrediting board.
Passing the exam will give you the license as a professional hair stylist. With that, you can start looking for work in salons or beauty spas within your area. Keep in mind that the US board of cosmetology requires that licenses be renewed every 2 years to keep its validity. Renewal process includes taking up more cosmetology classes and trainings.
