From their designation, you would automatically have an idea on what they do. Pastry chefs are in charge of creating appetizing dessert items in pastry shops, cafes, bakeries and even in hotels and restaurants. Their work involves quite a long process so every food establishment needs to have at least one or two pastry chefs.
So, what does a pastry chef do?
- A typical day starts with preparing the necessary ingredients and equipment to be used. Preparing ahead of time will lessen the chances of any possible kitchen mishap. Although, in 5-star hotels, this task can be assigned to an intern or a kitchen helper.
- Pastry chefs bake and prepare according to what is assigned to them for the day. They may be asked to create frozen or plated desserts depending on the menu.
- Personal pastry chefs, who do birthdays, weddings and many other events can bake, assemble and decorate a cake specific to the occasion.
- Decorate cakes and other pastries using sugar and chocolate works. They use many kinds of icing such as royal, boiled, butter cream or fondant.
- Pastry chefs do not only work with cakes. They also bake muffins, soufflés, breads, pies and tarts.
Generally, every dessert you devour in every meal from any restaurant or café is the work of a pastry chef. And for most people, the presentation and decoration of pastries in a shop is what entices them to try.
- Other tasks of a pastry chef include mentoring pastry interns. They make sure that interns and entry-level employees learn through practical applications.
- Pastry chefs could also choose to teach in culinary schools. They are qualified if they have the Certified Culinary Educator (CCE) or the Certified Secondary Culinary Educator (CSCE) certificate.
