Before, most florists have gained their skills on the job. You may still prefer to do the same, but because of the increasing number of people wanted to wet their feet in the industry, acquiring formal education and certification will help you advance in your chosen career.
What are the requirements to be a florist?
- In order to become an effective florist, you must have the qualities to become one. Typically, florists should have a good personality and excellent customer service to be able to attract regular clients once you start working as a florist.
- You must also be creative, imaginative, and has an eye for good color coordination.
- You must also have the ability to understand people’s need. You must be sensitive in order to know what to offer to the client.
- There is no specific requirement that is required for aspiring florists. But the following are basic requirements for you to get a greater opportunity in the future.
- To start your journey, you must complete a high school diploma or its equivalent. This will be required by most schools and employers as well.
- Search for a floral class or floral design program that will suit your availability and budget. Contact the school and complete necessary requirements.
- Complete a course in business, accounting and marketing, as well, if you prefer to run your own flower shop business after acquiring necessary skills and credentials.
- Obtain necessary experience to hone your skills. It is best that you work with an experienced or a certified florist.
- Get certified. The American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) offers a certification exam to potential florists. This is not required but will be a great benefit for you once you start looking for a job.
- Pass the Professional Floral Design Evaluation (PFDE) with a written exam score of 80% and above, and a 3.2 rating out of 5 for the hands-on evaluation.
- Complete continuing education courses in order to maintain your status. It will usually require you to complete at least 25 units every three years.
