Like all the other fields in the beauty industry, the income of a cosmetologist depends on experience, knowledge and client base. Entry level staff may not be able to work as a professional cosmetologist right away. In fact, most basic duties for new staff include maintaining the salon and keeping it clean. Or they could be assigned to wash used equipments when the shift ends.
How much does a cosmetologist make?
- A cosmetologist who just finished the training and is working as an intern may not get paid for their services. However, they are sometimes given bonuses plus a portion of the tips and commissions. According to BLS, the starting rate for cosmetologists is $7- $9.50 per hour.
- Stylists, nail technicians and estheticians with a few years experience can earn $11.50-$20 an hour.
- Among the specializations, those working on skin and facial treatments earn the most at $13.81 per hour, while nail technicians earn $9.46 and $8.32 for those in charge of washing and shampooing customer’s hair.
- Cosmetologists who have at least 8 years experience can earn an average of $36,000 a year excluding tips and commissions. Those with more experience can earn as much as $56,000 annually.
- In the United States, the top paying states for professionals in the beauty industry are the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Washington, Vermont and South Carolina. Wages in these states range from $14.90 to $18.11 hourly and $31,000 to $37,680 annually.
Since cosmetologists do not earn much, they incorporate hair and other beauty products in their salons and sell them to clients as well. These products can be a huge source of additional income for them.
