How Long Does It Take To Be A Zoologist?
In order to become a zoologist, you will need at least 4 years to complete the minimum requirement. But post-graduate degrees are necessary to advance you in the field, offering much better opportunities in the future.
How long does it take to be a zoologist?
- Though a bachelor’s degree can already give you a job in the field, you must also consider taking a graduate degree or even a doctoral degree. Most zoologists have completed at least a doctoral degree in zoology or biology.
- A bachelor’s degree typically takes 4 years to complete. This will include classroom discussions and laboratory works.
- Once you finished your degree, you may also consider enrolling in an internship program, volunteer works or part-time jobs in animal-related areas such as farms, zoos, veterinary clinics where you will get to do hands-on experience taking care and studying animals. Some employers may also require you to have at least one year of experience before getting hired for a full-time position.
- After completing a bachelor’s degree, consider taking a master’s degree. This will add another 2 to 3 years to complete. Obtaining a master’s degree will allow you to be employed in assistant and technician positions such as research assistant or research technician.
- Once you have completed a master’s degree, pursue a doctoral degree so that you will be able to conduct independent studies and land high-paid jobs. This will allow you to teach biology or zoology in higher education or work as an independent research zoologist in colleges and universities.
- A doctoral degree can last from 2 years up to 6 years.
It is quite clear that to become an independent zoologist you must complete a doctoral degree that will take you almost 8 years to complete, starting from an undergraduate degree.
