- Photojournalists, also called as press photographers, are experts that capture photographs that are newsworthy. They may take different kinds of subjects from politics, crimes, sports, people and other events that will best interest the public and readers.
- Although photojournalists are responsible for taking pictures, they also are responsible for imparting clear and truthful pictures. These images should also relay a message to the public.
- Aside from taking pictures, photojournalists do technical tasks such as editing, scanning and processing the image. They also select which images will be included to the story.
- Most photographers can either be assigned to do a portrait or news coverage. They are usually assigned to partner with a reporter. Photojournalists in this position are responsible for coordinating with reporters in order to know what to photograph so they can support the story.
- Photojournalists are not limited to taking still photos. They may also be responsible for taking video footages.
- Photojournalists that work freelance sell their works through the different media outlets. These journalists create written news supported by photographs or submit photographs alone as a substitute.
- Since photojournalists make use of high quality equipment necessary to take clear photographs, they do technical tasks in keeping the equipment well functioning and repairing them if necessary.
- Photojournalists have irregular work hours. Though most of them work 8 hours a day, some photojournalists who work for large publications often spend 10 to 12 hours a day, including overtime. Most of them are often scheduled to remain on-call in case that the publications need them.
Photojournalists typically serve as our window to the truth. They do not work alone but coordinate with other journalists to come up with great photographs for their readers.
