What are the requirements to be a movie director?
There is no strict path in order to become a movie director. But similar to other profession, gaining a formal education and experience will allow you to have better opportunities when you start looking for a job. Here are the things you need to consider to start a career as a movie director.
- Obtain a bachelor’s degree in filmmaking or other related courses. A degree program will allow you to be educated on different areas of film production and is most respectable for potential employers.
- Consider gaining a master’s degree in film. Though this in not a necessity, obtaining a graduate degree will help you further you career, be able to hone your skills, learn more and will open more doors for opportunities.
- Gain experience through internship programs. Participate in your school movie projects where you get the chance to work in a team and be able to develop your skills.
- Develop your portfolio, further practice your profession after graduating. Once you get hold of your degree, practice your craft by directing short films that you can eventually add to your portfolio. Make short films, music videos, commercials and alike that will allow you develop your directing skills and other aspects of film production.
- Join organizations like the Directors Guild of America (DGA) to gain more contacts with people in the industry. They also offer an assistant director training program, which will expose you more on the actual film production set.
