How Long Does It Take To Become A Translator?
The demand for translators in the United States is significantly increasing. A lot of people desire to make translation as a profession, especially those who were born bilingual. But how long does it take for one to become a translator?
There are several factors that would determine the span of time that you will have to wait for you to be able to practice your profession as a translator. Those who were born bilingual will often take a shorter time mastering their language combination. A formal education in foreign language will be helpful but immersion in the culture and language is usually recommended for you to master the language accurately.

Like any other profession, finishing a college degree will definitely help you to get a job. The time you spent in college will depend on the type of degree you prefer to take. It is not necessary for one to have a degree in translation to be recognized as a translator. You may take a degree in fields where you would want to work as a translator such as in medical settings, business, literature, law or politics.
Most translators have finished a bachelor’s degree, taking those about 4 years to finish college. Others also prefer to finish a postgraduate or master’s degree that will take them longer to finish. Translators who have finished a master’s degree are usually in demand for positions involving international business, legal and government matters. Some employers do accept translators who have only finished an undergraduate or an associate degree, but the chances of landing a good salaried position may be limited.

After graduating in college, translators would find a prospective employer where they could land their firsthand work experience. But it is difficult to get a job in a translation company, considering that you don’t have enough experience to testify your capability to do the job. Another option would be to do volunteer work. Most translators would also prefer to be certified before working as a professional. Being certified will depend on the certification training program you prefer to take and the time you spend in passing the certification exam.
How long one will take in order to be a translator varies from one person to another. Bilinguals may be spared of taking long hour trainings and can master the languages easily. But it will more on depend on your linguistic ability and hard work. If you are serious about being a translator, you will definitely work hard in order to master the languages easily and land that first job in a well paid position.
