How Long Does It Take To Become An Auto Mechanic?
You have a technical mind and are good with your hands. You have decided that you don’t want to wear a suit and work in an office every day. You like car of all ages and types. You have decided that a career as a mechanic may be a perfect fit. However, you have one more question – how long does it take to become an auto mechanic?
The answer is actually fairly complex. The simplest answer is two years. Let’s examine the possibilities:
1. First, in order to be a mechanic you must pass some Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification tests. To take ASE tests you must have two years of experience within the auto service industry. This means that the fastest way that you can become a mechanic is by working in the industry while taking courses to help pass ASE certification tests. After you have your two years of experience you can pass the tests and become a certified mechanic.
2. If you decide that you want to be an auto mechanic while in high school you can go through an Automotive Youth Education Systems (AYES) program. With this program you can take courses while in school and work as an intern – full-time during the summers and part-time during the school year.
After you graduate high school you may have up to two years of hands-on training and some work experience. This can count towards the requirements needed to take ASE certification tests.
3. Of course, some people may not have the time to take a lot of training courses while also working and having a life. Therefore, it will likely take many people more than two years to become a certified mechanic. It all depends on how long it takes to gain two years of full-time work experience in the industry and to be prepared to pass the tests.
How long does it take to become a master mechanic?
The only difference between a regular certified mechanic and a master mechanic is the number of ASE certification tests that are passed. An auto master mechanic must pass 8 tests. Depending on the ability and the time devoted by the mechanic, this doesn’t have to take any longer than getting the standard mechanic certificate. You can study for all 8 tests at the same time, though this can be difficult.
