What Does An Auto Mechanic Do?
As with most technology, automobiles are growing more and more complex. However, not only does a mechanic have to learn about the new technology being released, but the mechanic also must know about automobiles built 80 years ago since people still drive them and will still need them repaired. The list of responsibilities for a mechanic is large and is growing as new technology is released. What does an auto mechanic do?
The following is a list of responsibilities that an auto mechanic may face on any given day:
- Automobile maintenance – oil change, air filter change, tire rotation, changing tires, changing batteries, etc. Must be able to notice worn parts, such as belts and brakes.
- Diagnostics – Mechanical, electronics, and technical. Some diagnostics can be done while driving the automobile while some must be done by connecting the car to a computer and running diagnostic software. This part of the job requires a mechanic to be able to solve problems and troubleshoot. Most issues are not clear and the mechanic must make decisions.
- Engine repair – After diagnosing the problem, the mechanic must be able to know what parts need to be replaced or repaired. This must be done efficiently. If not done efficiently or correctly the employer will eventually lose business as clients will be unhappy with the service.
- Collision repair – This involves removing dents, replacing panels on car bodies and working on the frame of the autos.
- Use computers – Computers are used in diagnosis and repair. Not only that, but most manuals and training materials are on the computer.
This list briefly answers the question – what does an auto mechanic do? Many mechanics specialize – some deal only with brakes while others may deal only with collision repair. The best way to find out what the day to day tasks of a mechanic are is to visit local repair shops and dealerships. They are all eager for quality employees so they will provide a lot of information and even allow you to “shadow” a mechanic as they work.
